“Creativity is not just for artists. It’s for businesspeople looking for a new way to close a sale;
it’s for engineers trying to solve a problem; it’s for parents who want their children to see the world in more than one way.”
– Twyla Tharp, Dancer, Choreographer & Author
Creativity unlocks a whole new world for your child. It doesn’t just include the fine arts like painting or drawing. But it’s encouraging them to use their imagination to create. It’s about activating their ingenuity to think or do something innovative. Their creativity streak could make them a painter, musician, costume designer or photographer. But it can also come alive as a surgeon, entrepreneur, chef, businessperson or architect.
Creativity is housed within each one of us. We all have creativity coursing through our veins. It’s only a matter of how much we allow our imagination to be expressed in the world around us. Taking a step back from merely being a “consumer” and choosing to be a “producer” has a way of surprising us, or reminding us, of our abilities. Kids are perfect producers! They are unfettered from how things have been done in the past. They see the world with fresh eyes.
Creativity doesn’t look the same for everyone. We are each unique in our skills, talents and passions, like a snowflake or fingerprint. Those around us benefit from what we can uniquely offer to the world. Encouraging your child’s creativity empowers them to love themselves. They see their gifts as just that, gifts for themselves and their community.
This week, take the time to help your child explore what they are passionate about or what they are good at. Digging deeper and learning more about that passion will help them master it in a way that only they can. Activate both sides of their brain. Let their logical left side interact with their creative right side and see what magic happens!
